PP Power Rankings – Mar 29 2015

And we finally wrap up Winter 2015 (for the most part) this week with the final standings for Pedantic Perspective:

1. Aldnoah.Zero Season 2
2. Aldnoah.Zero Season 1 (because Inaho transcends all concepts of time and space)
3. Aldn~~

[ParticularlyPeeved is knocked out and dragged away from the keyboard]

[After a brief discussion, CriticalMiss is given a chance to write up the post]

Of course, the best anime of Winter 2015 is

1. Cross An~~~

[No, no Peeved was better]

Since I am no longer allowed to expound on the virtues and the merciful nature of Kaizuka Inaho and his glorious -ahem- mech, let’s actually see the final top five for Winter 2015 for Pedantic Perspective:

1. Shirobako – 4.89/5
2. Death Parade – 1.91/5
[3. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso – 1.79/5]
4. Junketsu no Maria – 1.39/5
5. Koufuku Graffiti – 1.02/5

Yup, what a change from the start of the season where Winter shows were struggling to break past ongoing shows from Fall. Well, to be fair, Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso got done last week, and Shirobako didn’t budge even once, but Death Parade has ended with a score of 1.91/5 which is higher that Shigatsu’s final score of 1.79/5 last week.

Here’s the entire results for this week. Note that Shigatsu is missing since there was no episode to consider:

Not much to compare to the general APR, we have the same top three (for the week). Overall, it looks pretty similar except for Koufuku Graffiti and The Idolmaster getting a look in here.

But there’s some interesting stuff here, yes Binan Koukou Chikyuu Bouei-bu Love! and Kantai Collection have tied at the end of the season. In fact, if I took the scores past two decimal places, Bouei-bu has actually outscored KanColle. Make of that what you will. I’m pretty sure there’s going to be some amount of judging going on. Don’t look at me, I just compiled the data. If I had my way, Aldnoah.Zer~~ [okay okay I’ll stop that].

Here’s the final graph for this season (click to get a closer and more interactive view):

Honestly I feel Shirobako is going to act like an outlier that will never be caught again this year. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that when I compile the end of year rankings from our votes over the year (using the normalized scores), Shirobako is going to still be at the top, even if it doesn’t actually top the end of year poll. Let’s see what happens. A normal season would max out with a show at around 3/5 in my opinion, but maybe I will be proved wrong.

However, all things considered, Shirobako was great, and clearly appealed to our varied tastes here at Pedantic Perspective, which is no mean feat. Maybe I’m just being too cynical by thinking that no show is that good to almost manage a 5/5, perhaps it deserves its place at the pinnacle. I’d be less skeptical if this happens more often. I feel Shirobako had it easy due to a lack of competition, but in no way is that Shirobako’s fault now is it. At the very least it got SerendipitouslySane to provide the following, rather dark (but hopeful? I don’t know), comment:

“Shirobako: yet another part of my life that I have loved has left me. At least there is hope for season 2, unlike my mother.”

PumpkinMochi was understandably much more upset about important things:

“It’s complete bullshit that glasses and muscles didn’t get their own ending in Absolute Duo. If they had done that, I’d have totally given it points.”

If you don’t know who glasses and muscles are, you’re probably better off anyway, so I’m not going to explain it.

There’s probably going to be a break for a week, maybe two, before the Spring 2015 rankings will begin in earnest. Winter 2015 didn’t really stand out too much, though many disagree. Perhaps it was ok for a Winter season. But in general, it just carried itself on the back of shows continuing on since Fall 2014. You should check out our Spring previews here, and look forward to more posts next season.
