PP Power Rankings – Feb 22 2015

If there was any doubt that none of us on this blog can agree on any shows this season (well except for that ONE show), then this week will put it to rest. We seem to have perfected the art of ensuring that two of us do not vote for a show, unless it’s just for 1 or 2 points. While the very top may look deceptively similar, the ranks of all the shows are incredibly volatile:

1. Shirobako
2. Death Parade
3. Junketsu no Maria
4. Koufuku Graffiti
5. Saenai Heroine no Sodate-kata

I also felt the need to create two graphs, the reason should be rather self-explanatory since this happens to be the graph showing all the shows:

Here’s a bit more focus on the competition between a score of 0 – 1.5:

You can click on both graphs above to get a closer look. As for the complete results this week, we have:

I’m going to disclose right now that I believe I am the only person on this blog currently watching the shows Gundam Build Fighters Try and Akatsuki no Yona from last season. Last season I thought of them as “nice to watch”, but after seeing what’s been on offer this season, suddenly they seem like coherent, engaging, logically progressing, and plot consistent shows. Hmm, well actually, they were always like that. Clearly I have a really low opinion of new shows this season. Yet it’s surprising they’ve landed up so close to the top five. There is an extremely low attach rate for the shows from this season. Voted for one week, gone the next. Just look at what happened to the Idolmaster.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso continued being Shigatsu where it did it’s best to ruin itself. After spending half an episode setting what I consider to be a completely new standard in piano playing animation, and one that is well-deserved, it still has no idea how to tell a story that deals with people. There’s a classic in there, there’s even a touching story to be found, it’s just been mutilated; not least by attempting humour through utter idiocy and crassness. Now some may argue that it’s simply a style, one that just doesn’t appeal to me perhaps? But I’d posit that it just doesn’t work for this show, it’s not needed. I’ve seen idiotic humour in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, and unlike Kelloggs who can’t stand it at all, I still don’t mind it in that show – it knows where to put it, for the most part, and at no point completely breaks the flow unnecessarily. I can’t really say that about Shigatsu, these idiotic moments just seem to be there, and don’t make sense most of the time. This show is begging for episodes like Tsubaki’s baseball game loss and Emi’s piano performance, not random Onii-chan misunderstandings. Even that was trying to show something, but was a really poor way to show it. It deserved more respect.

Ok, I kind of got sidetracked there, this is supposed to be a simple ratings post. Shigatsu just disappoints me so much because of the potential it has that I couldn’t resist ranting about it. As usual we aren’t really similar to the general APR, well I mean other than the fact that everyone loves Shirobako, and Death Parade is as good as it gets for this season (am I being sarcastic?). Jojo did move up significantly here too, though not enough to make it into the top five. It could happen, seeing as everything below rank 3 has a normalized score of less than 1.0 at the moment. Junketsu no Maria is on the cusp in the general APR, which is a first. It’s at #3 here.

No guarantees what next week is going to look like.
