PP Power Rankings – Jan 18 2015

A new year, a new season of anime. The official anime power rankings already started one week ago, and here I’ve been dilly-dallying waiting for almost all the shows to air. Surely that would mean we’re going to have a quality selection of shows to rank. Officially everyone is in love with the new season, well except for a certain Shirobako. So what do we have over here at Pedantic Perspective? Well for one thing, we seem less inclined to distribute lots of points to shows that have just started airing…. and that sort of left us with an extremely familiar looking top 3.

1. Shirobako
2. Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu
3. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso

Quite frankly Shirobako ran away with everything, just look at that score:

Focussing on just the new season, Death Parade managed to grab the most points, but what’s amazing is that no show that has just begun to air got more than 50% support. The varied tastes of the bloggers here seem to have ensured that almost all possibly worthwhile Winter 2015 shows managed to get a look in.

Rolling Girls, a show almost drowning in love over in the official rankings, just about managed to squeak in with bear lesbians. While I can only really speak for myself when I say I wasn’t too impressed or interested in Kyousogiga (a show Rolling Girls is being compared with), clearly there’s something in that style that makes the greater blogosphere go wild while leaving us here at Pedantic Perspective rather cold.

Since I’m clearly only talking about myself anyway, I may as well go on and controversially add that I haven’t found any show in Winter 2015 as of yet worthwhile enough to take on the ongoing shows (that I haven’t yet dropped). But I’ll be fair, it has only been a couple of episodes, and I’m comparing them to shows that have around 12 episodes of buildup to work on. Though that isn’t necessarily an advantage – it’s probably easier to watch Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso while trying to forget the mess created in most of the previous episodes when it tried to build up relationships that ranged from simply not making sense to downright psychologically damaging (yeah, bullying someone in depression isn’t a way to get them out of it).

Everyone knows that most of us here love slice of life, and shows about cute girls doing cute things (is it like a blog rule or something?), so no surprises to see a certain Shaft show and a bunch of idols that didn’t even get a look in officially to be right on the cusp of the top 5. And as other shows begin to disappoint (pessimistic aren’t I?), I can very well see these holding their positions or improving their standings.

It’ll be a while before I get the trend graph out, need some data before that begins to look interesting, so for a few weeks it’s just going to be a table. Until next week then, uhh, go do whatever it is you do, and then come back and read the new post.
