Gaworare ep. 5 – Pissing in the Wind

Well, the sports festival was pretty fun but now it’s time for Souta to get serious and figure out a way to get rid of the death flag on his hea-

SCREW THAT, IT’S DATING TIME.

Souta had promised Akane that they would go on a date if they won the MVP Trophy, and going back on something as important as that is unacceptable, so he has no choice but to do it. The other girls and Megumu feel left out, so it is decided that Souta will go on individual dates with all of them. Ruri, who is the most sensible member of the cast, opts out to do what Souta should be doing, investigating the hidden passageway underneath the dorm.

Nanami also opts out because it is her duty as the tsundere to do so, which also kept me from titling this post Date A Five. Keeping in character, she also makes sure to not-so-subtly ask Souta to get her a cake before he goes off on his mega-date. With the whole dorm to herself, Nanami indulges herself with her favorite pastimes, such as eating instant ramen and wiping the floor with her face.

Let the good times roll.

Let the good times roll.

First up on the dating carousel is Megumu. Being two guys, they do some manly things, including hunting bears, and they even manages to capture one thanks to Souta’s flag seeing power.

After such a strenuous activity, they unwind with some ice cream. Megumu gets some cream on his face, but fortunately, Souta is there to help out with a napkin.

This disappoints the other people at the café, who happen to all be fujoshi that wanted to see Souta lick the cream off instead. The joke doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, since a recurring thing is that people keep thinking that Megumu is a girl. So unless the fujoshi were all super perceptive, they wouldn’t have gotten excited over what they saw.

Moving on, it’s now Akane’s turn with Souta, and they end up renting a rowboat. The calm and benign experience is ruined when Akane grabs one of the oars and starts swinging it around like a maniac.

Fun fact: About half of all boating accidents occur under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Eventually, Akane gets her clothes wet and they need to find a place where no one would be in order to dry off. Naturally, they head to the library. Akane thanks Souta for being such a nice person or something. Then their date just ends, and it’s time for another girl to take the spotlight.

Next up is Rin, who has brought pictures of her and Souta when they were kids. They look back fondly on their childhood memories, including a time when they climbed to the top of a smokestack and celebrated it in a rather unorthodox manner.

Rin gets flustered over this repressed memory and demands that Souta take responsibility for what happened before passing out. I appreciate how these dates keep getting shorter and shorter.

While carrying Rin, Souta runs into Okiku and they head back to their dorm. Souta apologizes for not being able to take her anywhere for their date, but she is just satisfied with having him put his head on her lap while the two of them talk about their shared memories, especially a time when Souta gave a crappy keychain to Okiku.

At this point, there are just a few minutes left in the episode, so the show decides to advance the plot somewhat, but only after getting a crucial bath scene out of the way.

Remember when you passed out in the park? Or how you stayed home and ended up sleeping all day? Such wonderful memories.

While Souta and company were gallivanting around town, Ruri has found the secret tunnel underneath the dorm, which leads to a mysterious door. She and Souta find a mysterious sealed box behind the door, and a bright light suddenly emanates from a large crack in the cavern walls. Souta runs to see the source of this, which turns out to be…

A kuudere ninja?

I’m glad that there was some actual material relevant to Souta and his death flag. I am curious to see what secrets this new character holds, since she also can see flags. Hopefully, the next episode will be more plot relevan-

SCREW THAT, IT’S BEACH TIME.
