Welcome to day six of our twelve days of anime series, in which we present you with the fanservice portion of this exercise. Because if we can’t get the pageviews through running jokes into the ground quality writing, we might as well try getting them with some good, old-fashioned T&A. On that note, I will begin with everybody’s favorite magical science girl anime: Vividred Operation.
Takamura Kazuhiro has a singular talent, although putting what that talent is into words it not an easy task. A veteran of many old Gainax productions he has since moved on into diretorial work, most notably with 2008’s Strike Witches, an anime that is infamous if nothing else. Takamura has managed to take the over the top unrestrained nature displayed by Gainax at times and apply it to lesbians and butts. The problem with this is that lesbians and butts lack the thematic and emotional depth of other all girls anime such as K-ON where the chara-
Er… ahem. Where was I? Oh right, butts. To call what Strike Witches, and to a… different extent what Vividred, accomplishes refuge in audacity would be to sell it short. It’s closer to refuge in audacious audacity but even that might not do it justice. Takamura has managed to be so completely shameless that even if you don’t like it, you have to begrudgingly respect it. Or maybe not, but I enjoy it.
Anyway, I’m here to talk about episode six of Vividred Operation: the descriptively titled “The Story of How Kenjiro Tries to Strengthen the Power of Friendship Between Akanae and the Girls and How It Ends Up a Total Mess.” This was a beach episode, but it’s hard to make a beach episode stand out when the female cast is perpetually wearing either hot pants or spats in the first place. But there’s no need to worry, Takamura to the rescue with shameless absurdity in the way only he can deliver. Himawari notices a certain patch on the bottom of Akane’s swimsuit:
Of course Himawari isn’t one to just do whatever a girl’s butt tells her to do and so she does this:
Now most directors would stop there with Akane’s surprise serving as the punch line to this lewd but not outrageous gag. Takamura isn’t most directors though which means that Akane’s swimsuit must balloon out into a huge ball several meters wide:
Good job Takamura. You really showed us. That’s one crazy thing that just happened. I don’t know how you do it.
But wait, there’s more? Of course there is. We wouldn’t be satisfied with a girl’s swimsuit simply ballooning out to a dozen times her size. That’s not enough for Takamura. So what happens next? Well the girls climb inside of course:
Because why the hell not really? Vividred calls upon you to check any semblance of logic or sanity at the door and this is just another example of that style. Just in case you weren’t sure what was going on inside the swimsuit turned tent, Takamura’s prepared to show you:
Mercifully, Takamura is done now. (for that scene anyway) So as the girls move on to their next adventure we thank you, Takamura Kazuhiro , for having the audacity and the shamelessness and the balls to stand out in a sea of otherwise indistinguishable fanservice anime. Your anime don’t present us with the best in terms of writing or characterization but you do offer us something we can’t get anywhere else, and that has to count for something, right? At least I hope so, otherwise I’m watching this trash for no reason…. Aw hell…..
